Underactive Thyroid and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatic conditions associated with thyroid disorders are:

1. Arthritis triggered by underactive thyroid

This condition is caused by excessive deposits of certain proteins in the tissues. Also, the thyroid stimulating hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain can cause excessive collection of proteins. Symptoms may include vague discomfort and pain, but usually there are no manifestations of certain inflammatory processes.

Thickening joints and fluid collections occur in 33% of patients. In this case, the knees, ankles, small joints of the hands and feet are unusually thick.

2. Muscle diseases caused by underactive thyroid

These are characterized by symptoms such as slow movement and delayed muscle contractions, fatigue, muscle cramps, muscle pain and stiffness.

Muscle enlargement occurs in 15% of patients diagnosed with underactive thyroid, but muscle contraction is quite rare. Symptoms are often aggravated by cold and inactivity.

Diet in arthritis caused by underactive thyroid

Diets based on vegetables and fruits are very helpful. Some fat fish have protective properties due to their neutralizing and anti-inflammatory effects and toxic oxygen free radicals – present in many patients with rheumatoid arthritis. One must eat more fish (preferably catfish) in order to benefit of anti-inflammatory effects, especially in collagen diseases and arthritis.
