Celandine – Health Benefits for Your Liver and Digestion
Greater Celandine or Chelidonium Majus has a long history of use particularly in Europe, but also in traditional Chinese medicine. Ancient Greeks used the plant as an effective detoxifying agent while the Romans used it as a blood cleanser. The French herbalist Maurice Mességué mentioned celandine tea as an effective remedy for liver problems.

Benefits of Greater Celandine
Celandine extract is rich in antioxidant properties, and this prompted the plant to be included in herbal remedies designed to support the liver and the biliary tract. The plant also contains chelidonic acid which can relieve discomfort caused by certain harmful organisms. It can relieve the symptoms of ulcerative colitis, upset stomach, irritable bowel syndrome, stomach cancer, gallbladder disorders, high blood pressure and osteoarthritis.
The juice from the plant can be applied directly to the skin to treat warts, eczema, rashes, and scabies, or on the gums to treat tooth pain.
Celandine can also be consumed as powder, syrup, infusion, tincture or by using its juice for various medical conditions.
Celandine powder
Take some Celandine strains and let them dry in the sun. Then grind them into a fine powder and store it in glass jars with a lid for maximum three weeks. After this period, it loses it medicinal properties.
Celandine tincture
You can prepare your own tincture by adding 15 tablespoons of Celandine powder to 400 ml of 50° alcohol. Put a lid over the recipient and let it macerate for 14 days. Strain into a bottle and keep it a dark and cool place.
Fresh celandine juice
Wash the stems, flowers, and leaves of the plant, and then squeeze the juice out of them. The liquid should only be used externally, and it can be effective for warts, eczema or eye disease (retinal bleedings, cornea spots or cataracts).
Celandine infusion
Take a tablespoon of Celandine powder and boil it in a cup of water. The infusion can be used to treat hemorrhoids. Drink 2-3 cups of Celandine infusion every day.
Celandine syrup
Boil a liter of water. When it starts bubbling, add five grams of dried Celandine. Cover the pot and keep it in a warm place overnight. The next day, filter the liquid and mix it with 200 grams of honey until it is completely dissolved. Keep the syrup in a bottle in the fridge. It is recommended for hepatic afflictions, being able of regenerating the hepatic cells. Take a tablespoon of the syrup every hour, ten times a day.
How to take Celandine
- Liver Diseases – Take 2g of powder four times a day for three weeks. Stop for one week then repeat the procedures.
- Jaundice – Take 30 g of celandine and soak it in 500 ml of white wine. Leave for 1-2 hours, then strain the liquid and drink it with small sips.
- Preventing bile stones – Take 2g of celandine powder, three times a day (in the morning, noon and at night) for one month. You can repeat after a break of ten days.
