Treating Edemas with Essential Oils

If you are constantly fighting against swelling in your legs, ankles, and feet, then you are more than likely faced with an edema. This condition usually appears when liquid is collected in your lower limbs, becoming trapped and not able to circulate throughout the rest of the body.

essential oils for edema

This condition can be treated two ways. The first one involves you going to the doctor and requesting a consultation. However, before starting to use drugstore medicine, you might want to try a massage using these oils.

  • Chamomile Essential Oil

Since chamomile is anti-inflammatory in nature, it can work wonders when it comes to swollen limbs. Originally, the properties of this plant make it a well-known treatment for poison ivy. Now, the benefits for it keep spreading. If you only add a few drops of chamomile oil to the affected area and start kneading, you will notice that it will start subsiding shortly. You can also apply it with a damp cloth which you will rub on your feet.

  • Tea Tree Essential Oil

While other oils may need to be diluted before being applied to the skin, tea tree oil can be used without having to mix it with any other carrier oils. Just apply a few drops of tea tree oil on the swollen feet and massage them by using outward strokes – from the feet up to the knees. This will help the fluid spread out.

  • Lavender Essential Oil

Not only does this oil smell nice, but it can also help ease your discomfort. To reduce any swollen areas, apply some lavender oil and start massaging it slowly, with moderate pressure. You will notice that shortly after, the pain and swelling will subside.

  • Geranium Essential Oil

This one treats your edema by balancing the oil glands responsible for the inflamed skin. Just add a few drops of this oil to your bath water and soak for at least 30 minutes to get rid of the swelling. You can also mix it with a carrier oil and apply it directly to your skin. Not only does it work wonders with edemas, but it can also help you get rid of acne, bug bites, cold sores and hemorrhoids.

  • Grapefruit, Lemongrass and Cypress Essential Oils

A blend of these essential oils can help you reduce the swelling of the skin in as fast as a couple of minutes. To make this remedy, you will need to mix 2 tablespoons of melted coconut, canola or sunflower as a carrier oil, to which you will add 2-3 drops of each grapefruit, cypress, and lemongrass essential oil. The mixture will be then applied to the affected area, which you will massage for the next 10 minutes. Remember, by keeping your feet up as you rub, you will promote a better circulation of the blood.

If you keep experiencing swelling problems, it might be a good idea to contact your doctor. Sometimes, an edema can be a symptom of liver, kidney, and even heart problems.
