Homemade Natural Toothpaste Recipes

People in the ancient times have used various ingredients for toothpaste: ash, brick, salt, charcoal, mud or rangoli powder. However, in the modern times, people are using expensive tubes with ingredients they never heard of so as to make their smile brighter and whiter. Have you ever wondered what the conventional toothpastes contain? Well, they include triclosan, sodium fluoride, artificial sweeteners, synthetic dyes made from coal tar and petroleum, titanium dioxide, sodium hydroxide (or caustic soda), sulfate and sodium lauryl. It doesn’t sound very nice, does it? Even though we’re not swallowing the toothpaste, from time to time some of it will go down the gullet. If you’re concerned about the risks that come from ingesting these artificial ingredients, maybe it’s best to move on to natural homemade toothpastes.

Homemade Toothpaste Recipes

Vegan Toothpaste

Isn’t all toothpaste vegan? Well, yes it is, but this recipe contains only ingredients coming from vegetable origins. So, for this toothpaste you will need:

–          Baking soda (4 tablespoons)

–          Vegetable glycerin (2 teaspoons)

–          Water (8 tablespoons)

–          Guar gum (half a teaspoon)

–          Citrus, clove or peppermint pure essential oil (5 drops)

Mix all the ingredients together and cook them on low heat. Stir frequently until the mixture has the texture of a paste. Let it cool and then add some essential oil so that it has a good taste. Store the paste in a sterile jar and make sure to keep it at room temperature. You can use it as any other regular toothpaste.

Toothpaste Made from Coconut

This sounds quite delicious, doesn’t it? In this recipe, the coconut oil will replace the glycerin. This flavor will mask the taste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and if you are looking for a sweeter taste, you can add stevia oil. Use the following ingredients:

–          Baking soda (6 teaspoons)

–          Clove, peppermint or citrus essential oil (10 drops)

–          Coconut oil (2 tablespoons)

–          Hydrogen peroxide (a quarter teaspoon)

Put all the ingredients in a bowl, starting with the baking soda. Mix them well, until you reach the paste texture. If it’s too dry add coconut oil and if it’s runny add baking soda. Use an opaque container to store this toothpaste and use it as you regularly do.

Simple Toothpaste

This is the easiest of the three formulas. Its only disadvantage is that it can only be used once; therefore you will have to prepare it every time you want to brush your teeth. However, as soon as you get used to this ritual, it won’t be an inconvenient anymore. Here is what you need for this recipe:

–          Baking soda (1 teaspoon)

–          Sea salt (half a teaspoon)

–          Water (a few drops)

–          Citrus, clove or peppermint essential oil (1 drop)

Use a bowl to mix all the ingredients until you see the paste texture. Since the quantity is quite small, you won’t need to store this paste so you will have to use it as soon as it’s ready. Put it on your toothbrush and just brush your teeth as usual.

Even though these recipes require some time, you can be sure that your toothpaste will be natural and safe to use and you will remove the risk of ingesting unhealthy ingredients.
