Easy Homemade Almond Milk Filled with Vitamins and Antioxidants
Ever since childhood, from the time when we would visit our grandmothers’ countryside home, we would continuously be told that in order to grow like a big and strong, we had to drink lots of milk. But what our grandmothers didn’t know was that the chances of being intolerant to milk were very high. Not to mention that, recently, scientists discovered that milk is not as healthy as everyone believed.
Here’s the issue: studies show that these health guidelines were basically made from the opinion and assumption of the mass instead of the actual research made on the product. A study from the British Medical Journal proved not only that milk is bad for you, but that drinking lots of milk leads to a higher death rate, and ironically, more chances of breaking your bones!
Now we know that milk is bad. But what should we do? Well, we can go to the first convenience store we can find, and get an alternative that’s less harmful. Because whether we like it or not, we need something to replace it. How else would we eat our cereal in the morning, drink our coffee or bake our favorite cake? Here is where the shelf with almond, soy, coconut and cashew milk comes to the rescue.
But is that a healthy alternative? Not really. Just take a closer look at the ingredients list, and you’ll see how many synthetic vitamins you can find there. They will all make you put the product back on the shelf. For example, we can mention Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D2, Tocopherol Acetate and Calcium Carbonate, all of which increase the risk of bone fractures, heart and liver problems, and also cancer. Not to mention that they literally make you feel sick. In conclusion, these types of products are just as bad as milk.
So let’s just put those “healthy” alternatives back on the shelf and make our own. For that, you will need the following:
- a cup of raw organic almonds
- 2-3 teaspoons of honey
- a pinch of sea salt
- ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon (optional)
- a strainer
- a cheesecloth
- 10 cups of water which you divide in half.
Now that we know the ingredients, how do we make it? Follow the recipe:
- Let the almonds soak in a bowl that’s covered throughout the night.
- Strain the nuts and put them in a blender together with the rest of the water.
- Place the cheesecloth over the strainer and drain the almond meal
- Press on the cheesecloth to get rid of excess liquid
- Put the mix back in the blender and add the rest of the ingredients.
- Place the milk in a container and it can sit in the fridge for up to one week.
And voila! There you have it: a healthy, easy to make recipe that only takes 5 minutes to prepare.
