We live in a world in which modern medicine has a treatment for absolutely every disease and medical problem that we could think of. If we feel even the slightest pain in our body, we have been educated to automatically link it with dozens of dangerous conditions and, consequently, look immediately for “specialized” help. And how sad is that! We have an endless source of natural remedies in our immediate proximity that wait for us to use them properly.
The same goes for a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Take for example this incredibly simple smoothie prepared from ingredients as common as carrot and apricot. The result, however, is nowhere near common.
The Wonder Recipe
- 2 small carrots
- 5-10 apricots
- 1 glass (250 ml) water
Wash the carrots and slice them using the rondelle cut. Place them inside the blender. Wash the apricots and remove the core. Place them in the blender as well and add sufficient water. You can also use mineral water or partially carbonated water for a much more refreshing sensation. Blend until a smooth and homogenous liquid is obtained. Add more water if the drink is too thick for your taste.
Your smoothie should now have an extremely refreshing sour-sweet taste. If you like it even sweeter, you can add 1 tbsp of honey.
What Makes It So Healthy?
Apricots are generally known for the great benefit that they bring to the human eye. More specifically, apricots protect us against eyesight deterioration that usually comes with age. They are an amazing source of vitamins A and C, which play the important role of preventing the damages caused by free radicals on cells and tissues, in this way protecting the crystalline lens.
Apricots also contain carotenoid and xanthophylls, nutrients considered by specialists to contribute to the eyesight protection against the natural damages that appear with age. The apricot lutein (a xanthophyll) in particular protects the retina – that part in the eye which functions exactly like the film in a camera – against injures caused by the blue light.
Even more than that, scientists and researchers reached the conclusion that the persons who consume fruits on a regular basis have a lower risk of losing their vision as they grow older. This benefit was observed in persons who consume three or more fuit servings per day. Three servings can seem a lot, but fruits are extremely versatile and can be consumed in numerous ways. Not only that you can eat them as such, but you can also add them in your morning smoothie), yogurt, salad, ice-cream, pies and other desserts.
This smoothie is of great use for the persons suffering from digestive problems as well. Apricots are a rich source of fiber; 50% of the fiber that can be found in apricots is soluble fiber. Hence, these fruits also help you keep your cholesterol level under control.
No one blames you if you are surprised or even a bit doubtful. These are great adjectives to describe Mother Nature in general, anyway. But this should make you even more willing to try this recipe and discover the result for yourself. In the end, why wouldn’t you like the sweet & sour taste of such a delicious and full of nutrients smoothie?
