We’ve all been there in one moment or another and one thing is for sure: no one likes to have a fever. It is an unpleasant experience to go through, but it is also the body’s way to fight the virus that you have inside your body. Some choose to ignore it, others choose to treat it. If you are a part of the second category, here are 5 natural ways in which you can cool off and eliminate any signs of fever you might have.
- Elder flowers – You can fight a high fever and the uncomfortable chills it brings by drinking this tea. Make sure to drink it while it’s really hot, so that you can start the sweating process. In 2/3 cup of boiling water add 2 teaspoons of dried elder flowers and drink up to 5 cups a day or until you notice that the fever is down.
- Chamomile – Just like the previous herb, chamomile also has the ability to reduce the fever due to one of its compounds named bisabolol which has anti-inflammatory properties and is, therefore, able to bring down high temperatures. Besides, it also has sedative properties, so it will help you get a better rest. Drink the chamomile tea which is prepared by using 2 teaspoons of dried chamomile flowers placed in 2/3 cup of boiled water. Drink it 3-4 times a day.
- Peppermint leaves – They have an even more powerful effect when it comes to fighting a fever. In combination with elder flowers and yarrow flowers, these peppermint leaves will have a different approach on this unpleasant state of the body. You will need 2 cups of boiling water in which you should add one-half teaspoon of each plant. Let the whole composition steep for 10 minutes, then strain and drink it. If your children are having a fever, you can give them this tea combined with fruit juice.
- Eucalyptus – In this case, the essential oil of eucalyptus will do the work. You can inhale its steam by boiling a bit of water in which you will add a few drops of essential oil. Stay on top of the pot and cover your head with a towel. Breathe in the steam. You will notice that besides lowering down your fever, you will also have your nasal areas decongested if you caught a cold or the flu.
- Ginger – One of the best ways to treat fever. The fresh ginger root can be sliced and placed into boiling water. Add some honey. If you are not into tea, you can go for ginger ale, just make sure that it is completely natural.
If you are having a fever and cannot sleep, use some lavender essential oil. Put it on a cotton ball and place it under the pillow. Also, if your body aches because of the fever, try having a bath with a few drops of rosemary essential oil. You will feel instantly refreshed and the pain will be long gone.
