Treat Cuts, Wounds and Leg Ulcers with Honey

Honey is an ingredient that should be present in each home. Not only is it a healthy substitute for sugar, but it is also filled with unusual healing properties that each of us should take advantage of. Ever since the early days of the Egyptians, honey would be used in treating ailments, due to its medicinal and nutritional value. Some of the most common conditions that honey combats include acne, constipation, sleeplessness, cough, sore throat, anxiety, and so on.

At the same time, this miraculous ingredient is known to be particularly effective with treating burns, bed sores, wounds, cuts, and so on. That is because honey aims at facilitating the rapid healing of the skin, by promoting tissue regeneration, fibroblast and angiogenesis growth.

When you apply honey on a wound, the enzymes deliver antiseptic hydrogen peroxide, which has the role of fighting against bacteria. Nonetheless, it doesn’t have a detrimental impact, such as inhibiting fibroblast growth and causing tissue damage.

Concurrently, due to its osmotic effect, honey maintains the wound clean and moist, which is imperative for the formation of healthy granulation tissue, to prevent scarring. Not to mention that the highly acknowledged anti-inflammatory properties of honey diminish swelling and pain.

Information backed up by scientific studies

A wide range of studies have been conducted, all of them having the purpose to prove the therapeutic properties that honey possesses. For instance, in 2006, a study was published in the International Journal of Lower Extremity Wounds. 2,062 patients were involved in the study, and its purpose was to test the effects of using honey as a wound dressing. Researchers found out that honey was beneficial in the following ways:

  • Due to its amazing anti-inflammatory activity, edema is reduced, while scarring is minimized.
  • Honey is featured by amazing antibacterial properties that have the ability to remove existing infections while safeguarding wounds from becoming more infected.
  • Is facilitates the growth of the regeneration epithelial tissues, which ensures immediate healing.
  • It eliminates offensive odors.

Concurrently, a study developed in 2015, which was officially published in Wounds – A Compendium of Clinical Research and Practice indicates Manuka honey, in particular, is equipped with healing properties in the case of wounds.

However, if you wish to enjoy the healing properties that honey has, it’s highly recommended to choose raw honey as opposed to that found in stores. That is because commercial honey is pasteurized, and heated at high temperatures, which makes it lose its beneficial enzymes, powerful antioxidants, and other fantastic nutrients that are sensitive to heat.

Guidelines for using honey to facilitate healing

  • Approximate the extent of the wound, to determine the amount of honey you’ll need for the surface.
  • Clean the area well in advance, to eliminate dust and dirt.
  • Afterward, using a wound dressing, which you have rubbed in honey, wrap it around the affected area. Ideally, you should change the bandage for a couple of times a day. If you’re dealing with minor wounds, you can apply honey locally, while making sure that you spread the ingredient evenly.
