A Natural Remedy for Nausea – Essential Oils

Usually, essential oils can be obtained through a process of extraction, either by distillation or by expression. Other methods include solvent extraction or enfleurage, but especially the latter is rarely encountered nowadays.

Essential oils are a concentrated form of various herbs or fruits and are used as a natural remedy for different conditions, from skin problems to internal ones, like food poisoning, infections or digestive problems.

Studies have proven that essential oils can reduce nausea even after a surgical procedure and can be more effective than the common nausea medication.

These are a few ways in which essential oils can help eliminate nausea:

  • Inhaler

Ingredients needed: five drops of grapefruit essential oil, five drops of chamomile essential oil, five drops of peppermint essential oil, three drops of fennel essential oil and an inhaler for essential oils.

Use: Combine the ingredients and absorb the liquid into the inhaler. Inhale when you feel the need.

  • Inhalation

Ingredients: two-four drops of lavender essential oil

Use: Inhale the essential oil by applying it on a tissue, on your hands, or by placing it in a paper bag.

Another way in which you can inhale it is by vaporizing the oil through a diffuser. This will ensure a steady flow of essential oil.

  • Steam inhalation

Ingredients: one bowl of hot water, one towel, one or two drops of ginger essential oil.

Use: Add the drops of ginger essential oil in a bowl of hot water. By covering your head with the towel, inhale the steam for five minutes.

Keep the eyes closed and repeat the procedure when nausea returns.

  • Ingestion

Ingredients: one drop of peppermint essential oil, one teaspoon of honey and one cup of warm water.

Use: Dilute the honey and peppermint into a cup of water and drink it. This will alleviate the symptoms and can be used as many times as necessary.

  • Massage

Ingredients: four drops of lavender essential oil, three drops of peppermint essential oil, four drops of ginger essential oil and five teaspoons of carrier oil.

The carrier oil can be replaced by argan oil, grapeseed oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, sesame oil or macadamia oil.

Use: Place the ingredients together, in a non-reactive dish and mix them. Using a circular motion, rub the combination onto the abdomen and solar plexus.

  • Tea

Ingredients: one ginger root, one cup of hot water, one tablespoon of honey

Use: Thoroughly wash the ginger root and then slice it into small cubes. Place the pieces into a cup and add hot water and leave it to steep for at least five minutes. You can add one or two tablespoons of honey to sweeten the drink. According to preferences, you can choose to strain the liquid or drink it with ginger pieces.

You can alleviate nausea also by adding a tablespoon of coconut oil or Aloe Vera to your tea. Both these oils will soothe an upset stomach and relieve nausea.

  • A bath

Another way to reduce nausea is by taking a bath with Epsom salts, in which you add one or two drops of coconut oil or Aloe Vera oil.

Remember always to check with a specialist before consuming any essential oil, either for an internal or external condition.
