Recent studies have found that the cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) chemical in marijuana can help in healing fractures and even makes bones stronger.
The study was made by the Hebrew University and Tel Aviv University and appeared in the specialized Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. Researcher Yankel Gabet said that CBD can make bones stronger during the healing process, speeding the collagenous matrix maturation, the one that offers the basis for the mineralization of bone tissue. After a fractured bone has been healed with CBD, it will become stronger and it won’t be so easily broken in the future.
Cannabinoid receptors have been found in bones
Mild femoral fractures have been inflicted on rats. The researchers injected CBD in some of them and some with CBD plus THC (the chemical responsible for most of the marijuana’s psychological effects). The results showed that there was no difference in the healing process among the two groups.
This means that the body has receptors for cannabinoid compounds and that these are not confined only to the brain. The cannabinoid receptors not only stimulate bone formation, but they also inhibit bone loss.
Although there is plenty of research to be conducted until appropriate therapies can be developed, the fact that the clinical therapy objective of cannabis can be detached from its psychoactivity is of utmost importance for the future of medicine.
Medical marijuana and its benefits
This plant is already legal in some countries, thanks to its amazing benefits upon many medical conditions. It is mainly used to reduce chronic pain, to improve appetite in people suffering from AIDS and to diminish the awful side effects caused by chemotherapy. It can also show promising results in regulating blood sugar, reducing the symptoms of Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis and in reducing HIV progression.
Scientists from the American Academy of Neurology discovered that medical marijuana in the form of oral sprays or pills seemed to reduce muscle spasms and stiffness in people suffering from multiple sclerosis.
CBD can kill leukemia cells, stop the metastasis of many types of aggressive cancers and suppress seizures. Scientists have found that CBD is similar in effectiveness with the antipsychotic drug used in the treatment of paranoia and schizophrenia, but without the drug’s dangerous side effects.
Here is a list of the medical conditions that can be subject to medical marijuana:
- Multiple sclerosis or severe muscle spasms
- Crohn’s disease
- Terminal illness
- Cancer associated with chronic pain, nausea or vomiting,
- Epilepsy or seizures
- Tourette’s syndrome
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
- Chronic pain
Although marijuana it is still illegal under the US law, the use of CBD for research is legal in 17 US states, and the use of medical marijuana is legal in 23 states. Under the California law, the plant has been prescribed for various, such as migraines, insomnia and even substance abuse.
